Sometimes people think if they send letters from all over the country that will work. If I get a good volume of mail from constituents, it really gets my attention. But I represent the state of Illinois. If I get a bunch of mail from California, it really doesn’t have that much impact on me. Obviously if a friend calls, someone who’s worked in the campaign, someone you’ve known all your life, someone you went to school with, you see at a civic organization or in church on Sunday, there’s a personal relationship. Somebody who’s been involved in the other party or who may have supported your opponent, let’s be honest, there would be a different kind of relationship there. But my door is always open. Republicans or Democrats. Business or Labor. If they are a constituent of mine, they’ll get a hearing in my office. Most members of Congress take that approach. The bottom line is, if you are a constituent, if you are well informed, you get an opportunity to talk about what this issue will mean to you and to the community and your company. Your message will be heard. |
